Boston College (BC) – EC131.05 – Principles of Microeconomics (Inacio Guerberoff)

Course Description: This course is designed to meet a number of needs. It is the first course in the economics major, it is a required course for all CSOM students, it is one of the choices to fulfill the social sciences CORE requirement, and it serves as an elective to anyone who wants an introduction to economics. It introduces the basic tools of economic analysis and applies these tools to problems both of historical interest and of current public policy. It explores the development of economic analysis through the work of Adam Smith, Malthus, Ricardo, Marx, Keynes and other giants in the field. Finally, it looks at how we bring together what we learn from economics and what we learn from other fields.

Boston University (BU) – MA 124 – Calculus 2 (Nikola Popovic)

Course Description: This course opens with one of the oldest problems in modern calculus, the area problem. Chapter I gives the solution in terms of the definite integral, which is the basic concept of integral calculus. We then state the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, which relates integration and differentiation, and discuss useful integration techniques which greatly simplify the solution of many problems. Chapter II is devoted to various applications of the integral calculus: We learn to compute areas between curves, volumes of solids, and lengths of curves, and discuss examples from biology, economics, and statistics. One of the most important applications of calculus is to differential equations. In Chapter III, we give a brief introduction to this vast subject. Finally, in Chapter IV, we treat infinite sequences and series. Their importance in calculus stems partly from the fact that many functions can be approximated by so-called power series. In particular, we introduce the concepts of convergence and the limit, and discuss various criteria for convergence.

Boston University (BU) – MA 242 – Linear Algebra (Nikola Popovic)

Course Description: The concept of linearity is a fundamental one in mathematics; in fact, many of the mathematical models in use are linear, that is, described by systems of linear equations. This course is concerned with linear algebra, the “language” of linear modeling. Chapter 1 introduces some of the central concepts of linear algebra, including linear equations and the equivalent vector and matrix equations, linear (in)dependence, and linear transformations. Chapter 2 is devoted to algebraic manipulations with matrices, as well as to applications of matrix algebra. In Chapter 3, we define the so-called determinant of a square matrix. Chapter 4 introduces the fundamental notion of a vector space, which generalizes and unifies several of the concepts discussed in the previous chapters. In Chapter 5, we cover eigenvalues and eigenvectors, which arise naturally in the theory of dynamical systems. Chapter 6 is devoted to the concepts of orthogonality and orthogonal projections, as well as to approximating solutions of linear systems. Finally, time permitting, in Chapter 7, we briefly discuss symmetric matrices.
